Traditional Feng Shui is based on two approaches : on one side the San He system (study of the natural shapes) and on the other the San Yuan system (study of the influence of time). It must always be kept in mind that it is the man who is in the focus of a Feng Shui study. Consequently, we will help him or her to find the location that is best fitted/adapted for him or her according to the surrounding natural environment, to his/her birthday and his/her move in date.

The San He System

It considers the position of the natural shapes surrounding our living location (mountains, rivers) and the « cheminement » of the Qi. The aim is to find the best possible Qi quality for us in order to optimize our private and professional life. In effect, for the purpose of the analysis, imposing buildings can be considered as mountains and roads as rivers.

The Ba Zhai (Eight houses) belongs to the San He system. It is based on the harmony/concordance of the eight cardinal directions and their eight “trigrammes”. These “trigrammes”, which are an harmonious set of the Yin and Yang, are divided into two groups: the so-called West and East group. Depending on our day of birth we belong to one of these groups and we will have four disadvantageous and four advantageous directions or sectors. Thus, through this method we are able to reveal and use in the best possible way for each and everyone the positive energies in the private and/or business life.

The San Yuan system

It focusses on the time aspect of the study. In fact, the quality of the Qi differs in time. It includes the Xuan Kong Fei Xing system, which is also known as the Flying Stars and which is based on temporal cycles of 20 years as well as the move in date. This system gives us essential tools for evaluating the quality of the energy in each cycle of our home or working place. As a result, depending on our move in date and the different cycles, these sectors can be categorized as positive or negative. In this system we use a calculating rule in order to establish a scheme of the habitation (Luo Shu square) and determin the course of the energy (Flying Stars).

At last, thanks to the 8 Trigrammes and the 64 Hexagrammes, the Xuan Kong Da Gua system allows us to calculate the combinations of favourable directions and dates, which are positive for us.

Some people do sometimes only mention one type of system, “The school of shapes” (San He) or “The school of the compass” (San Yuan), and therefore only use one of these. Our pure traditional approach to Feng Shui is not consistent with using only one system, because it creates the risk not to be precise enough in our recommendations or even to falsify the facts.
